After moving to the United Arab Emirates it is essential that you get a driver’s license for yourself. Not that public transport facilities are bad, but it always better to have a driving license if plan to stay in any country for a longer period.
You need to register your name with one of the authorized driving schools in the UAE. You will be asked to undergo an eye test before training, followed by submission of your passport, residence stamp, NOC from the employer and eight passport-sized photographs. Must have documents before you move to the UAE If you are applying for automatic transmission vehicle’s license, do know that you will not be allowed to drive the manual transmission vehicle on the same license and vice-a-versa.
The training starts with the theory test of eight hours, which is conducted at authorized training centres. You will be required to submit an ID proof and RTA file before appearing for the theory test. A total of 35 questions are asked, out of which 17 questions are about general traffic conditions, and 18 questions are about specific scenarios. The candidate has to pass 11/17 and 12/18 questions respectively, to get eligible for the practical test. The fee for the theory test may change but is charged somewhere close to AED 200.
This is a small test that is done to understand the past driving experience of the candidate.
If you have a driver’s license issued by your home country within the last 2 to 5 years, then you can complete your test by just appearing for 30 hours training; and if the license issued is before 5 years, then 20 hours of classes should be sufficient. However, in case if you don’t have a driver’s license from any other country, then you will be entitled to a 40-hour training session.
Parking and Assessment Tests
Once the practical exam is done, the instructor will ask you to undergo the parking test and assessment test.
Training for Highway
After the completion of the parking and assessment tests, the trainer will brief you about the rules and regulations for driving on the highways.
You will be asked to appear for the road test on the date assigned by filling the application form along with fees worth AED 200. You will need to submit the RTA file, passport, and two photographs. You will be given a chance to exhibit your driving skills in a few minutes. In case if you fail the test, then you will be asked to register for seven more classes with a new road test date.
If you pass the test, the instructor or the inspector will hand over the approval papers that you have to submit to the pass counter along with ID Proofs and AED 100. You will also receive the test file which needs to be submitted on the control counter to collect the driving license!
